Proclaimination of The Victoria Institution as a National Heritage

Report By : Farris Rashly Mahfuz
On February 14th 2009, our prestigious Institution was involved in yet another historic event, not to be forgotten by those who attended it, old and present Victorians alike. Organised by the Ministry of Unity, Culture, Arts, and Heritage, the main purpose of the celebration was to acknowledge the recipients of the National Heritage honour. Our school is among them, as it was directly involved in Malaysian History, when the Japanese Army used VI as an administration base, and also had surrendered our country in our school hall! This significance paved the way for VI to host the accreditation ceremony. Among the others proclaimed as National Heritages were the MCKK, Masjid Jamek, our notable neighbour, Stadium Merdeka, Nasi Lemak, Yong Tau Foo, Roti Canai, and of course, Teh Tarik!
Before the ceremony began, the spotlight was focused on the arrival of distinguished ex-Victorians including Tan Sri Shamsuddin bin Abdul Kadir (Chairman of Sapura Holdings, Bank Islam, Donated the Surau), Tan Sri Dato’ Ramon Navaratnam (CEO of Bank Buruh, Corporate Adviser for Sunway Group), and Razif & Rashid Sidek (Thomas Cuppers). Also present were foreign diplomats and local dignitaries of unique backgrounds. The event officially kicked into gear when old Victorians Dato’ Seri Mohd. Shafie bin Apdal (Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister) and Dato’ Seri Zulhasnan Rafique (Federal Territories Minister) started to advance to the hall. Just before entering, they were entertained by cultural dancers in front of the porch. The ceremony began with a rendition of Negaraku by the VI Choir, which got the crowd settled in. Proceedings continued with the recital of the Doa. Next were the speeches by Datin Paduka Dato’ Professor Zuraina Majid (National Heritage Commissioner) and Shafie. Through their speeches, the masses were introduced to the significance of these Heritages. "The world already knows its name as Victoria Institution so it is my pleasure to announce that its name beginning today will remain as Victoria Institution," said Shafie. Right after that was the signing of the proclamation paper and plaque. The Bharata Natyam and Bobohizan (both National Heritages) shows followed. Ending the procession was the hanging of the plaque on the right-hand wall of the porch near the school’s foundation plaque. On the field, birds were released as a symbol of freedom for us Victorians.
That day, the VI Clap was heard again. Old and new Victorians alike, stood up in unison, alert at once, clapping with all their might, however old they were. Victorian were their hearts, with blue, Victorian blood flowing instead of red. Lifted, I was. The guests were served with food shortly after, and a news conference was held in the Bilik Gerakan. Many stayed on to talk to their long-lost friends, filled with emotion held for many, many years. A number of old Victorians walked around school with their spouses, reminiscing about their years in the school, how they walked through the corridors, got caught by the prefects for their indiscipline, and how they felt after getting their results in the hall. Some have their names carved on the panels in the hall, a mark all Victorians see, to be made benchmarks for achievements in the future. A normal picture may say a thousand words, but a portrait of VI should say over a million. No one can break the bond between a Victorian and his/her Victoria Institution, as some might call it home. No matter how long or short was your time in VI, you are still a part of the school, a small slab of stone that strengthens the school, as the saying goes, “Once a Victorian, Always a Victorian”. Let us all, for the sake of our school, continue to Be Yet Wiser.

Give Instructions To A Wiseman And He Will Be( t ) Yet Wiser?
Victorians,
It is with great shame I post these photos. These are notebooks provided to the teachers with errors on the school motto and the badge. I find it most distressing that some teachers are still using the notebook and more over no one has brought up the matter.
These are the photos which I managed to take of the notebook. I apologise for the bad image quality as it was taken by a cell phone.

Notice the gap above the Seladang and bellow the key.

Give Instructions To A Wise man And He Will Be( t ) Yet Wiser? How can such error be accepted?

Victoria Institution Committee Board.
Represents a platform for Victorians to set the standard for the school.
The objective of the committee is not only developing a new generation of Victorians who are creative, innovative, well informed, and skilled but also to bring a new age of glory for the school.
We are aiming to help Victorians to think outside the box beginning with ourselves so as to breed a generation of students who can bring about a new golden age for the school.
The Committee is also hoping to be able to organize activities and or events that can develop positive traits and slowly remove the negative traits in Victorians. We also hope to be able to organize the activities in order to create a feeling of brotherhood among the students of the school and also to develop a feeling of affection for the school.
In accordance with the above, the activities/events that we will be organizing, will hopefully encompass all aspects of developing an exemplary student not only in accordance with the school’s motto, ‘To be a scholar, sportsman and a gentleman”, but to improve on it and mould students into people who will become leaders in the nation.
The activities we will be organizing will also be aimed at unearthing hidden talent among the Victorians that may have remained hidden because of the lack of encouragement to display said talent. This will hopefully enable them to broaden their horizons and allow them to pursue a career where their inert talent would be able to shine.
Furthermore, we hope that with the establishment of the Committee, the events that are held in school by the other clubs receive more support from all parties. This being said, another priority of the Committee is to help ensure that other clubs in VI are able to perform up to a certain level.
